How Much Would a Northern European History Professor Make?
Question by Blade: how much would a northern european history professor make?
im working towards a PhD in Northern European History(vikings, celts, etc.). Ive always wanted to be a professor, since i was 4 years old and met an art history professor. I would like to ideally be a full time professor, writing books and teaching Northern European History. Ive heard that a full time professor(not lecturer or teaching assistant) makes no less than 6 figures, but id like to have more input on this. Thanks in advance.

The American term ‘professor’ equates to ‘university lecturer’ in Britain. Only senior heads of department and Chairs are awarded the title ‘Professor’ in British universities.
I work as a full time salaried History Lecturer in a British university (and have done for some years), and my job title is ‘Lecturer’
I’m not going to give you my salary figure (these things are regarded as private in Britain),and although I make some extra from book royalties and occasional research articles, and also from marking GCSE and A-Level History scripts, this only makes up a minor portion of my income.
What I will tell you is that I’ve got a big house, a big motorbike, a high maintenance Russian wife 20+ years younger than me (she doesn’t work),and holiday abroad twice a year. I can also afford to go out whenever I want, wear nice clothes, have enough money to pursue my hobbies and still save some money every year.
So,me and the wife don’t starve.

First off, there is an overabundance of PhDs in European and American History. So, IF you are lucky enough to get a job, you won’t be paid top money. My dad is a Business Professor; Business Professors start in the 6 figures. history professors do not. Typically, they start at around 55,000-70,000 as Assistant Professor; 70,000-90,000 as Assocaite professor, and 90,000-120,000 for Full Professors. Business Professors can be 90,000-110,000 for Assistant Prof; 110,000-150,000; 150,000+ (I know of some who make 225,000/yr +) and the market is good. This may seem harsh, but it’s reality. I love history, too, but now I will be pursuing a PhD in International Business because of all the perks that go with Business Professors (plus, I can specialize in the economics, history, and politics of a region I am interested in!)
