Some recommendations:

Alfred The Great.

Anne of the Thousand Days (about Anne Boleyn & Henry VIII)

Cromwell (About the English Civil War)

The Madness of King George.

Or, you could get everything from one great TV Series, “The History of Britain,” by Simon Schama

  • ammianus:

    Battle of Britain
    The Madness of King George
    Six Wives of Henry VIII
    The Other Boleyn Girl
    Mary Queen of Scots
    Waterloo
    Elizabeth R
    Zulu
    Zulu Dawn
    Breaker Morant
    The Libertine

Good movies to watch that are, however, grossly inaccurate historically:

    King Arthur
    Northwest Frontier
    Robin of Sherwood
    Cromwell

  • Roy:

Movies based on Shakespeare’s History Plays:
    Henry IV Part I
    Henry IV Part 2
    Henry V
    Henry VI Part I
    Henry VI Part 2
    Henry VI Part 3
Henry VIII (boring, not recommended even if someone did make a movie on him)
    Richard II
    Richard III
    Other recommendations:
    The Lion In Winter
    Braveheart

Please keep in mind very few movies about history are anywhere near historically accurate.

  • Lomax:

Just in case anyone else suggest it – NOT Braveheart. Excellent film, but with virtually no relation to the actual facts.

Movies are not quite reliable when wanting to learn about British History. They can help you catch the gist of the time, but to be historically accurate, try consulting some books.

I happen to like historical movies/costume dramas as well, and here are some, though they are mostly from the Tudor era (note that they may not be historically accurate!)
*The Tudors – (TV Series) If you want to get an idea of the political and religious atmosphere of the Tudor era
    *Elizabeth (and its sequel)
    *Shakespeare in Love
*The Duchess – a few political thingies can be picked up here, but my memory’s cloudy
    *The Young Victoria
