Deanna Durbin – Danny Boy
Performer – Deanna Durbin Lyrics – Frederick Weatherly The famous ballad “Danny Boy”, ironically, was written by a man who never set foot in Ireland. Weatherly, an English barrister who was also a prolific poet, had originally set “Danny Boy” to music he had composed. The song was not successful. When he heard the “Londonderry Air”, he realized that “Danny Boy” would fit nicely to that tune. Over 100 songs have been set to “Londonderry Air”, but “Danny Boy” is the most famous. Band and orchestral musicians will also recognize the tune as Grainger’s “Irish Tune from County Derry”. Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling, From glen to glen and down the mountain side; The summer’s gone, and all the roses falling; It’s you, it’s you must go, and I must bide. But come ye back when summer’s in the meadow, Or when the valley’s hushed and white with snow; I’ll be here in sunshine or in shadow; Danny boy, Oh Danny boy, I love you so. But if ye come and all the flowers are dying, If I am dead, as dead I well may be. Ye’ll come and find the place where I am lying, And kneel and say an “Ave” there for me. And I will know, ‘though soft ye tread around me, And then my grave shall richer sweeter be, Then you’ll bend down and tell me that you love me, And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me.

@electrodud She was 14 when she played her first movie(short) with Judy Garland. She lives in Paris and will respond to her fans but not the press. MGM could only use 1 of the 2. Producer said get rid of the fat one. It was misheard and they retained the fat one , which was Judy. Deann’s Durbin’s style in still used as a model for singing coaches even today. She was truly an amazing talent.
amazing high notes.
@hev936 It’s from “Because of Him” from 1946.
What a Beautiful voice and BEST Danny Boy I have heard.
Too bad we haven’t heard from her in over 50 years.
Hollywood is a scary and RAT infested place. I don’t blame her for weanting to get away from it.
As I have been saying all day she was the Jackie Evancho of her time. Maybe even better.
I hope Hollywood doesn’t corrupt Jackie Evancho once they get their claws in her
Does anyone know what was the youngest age she started to record?
God Bless you Deanna Durbin – hope you live FOREVER
Never been done better!
beautiful voice.
I wish she had a version where she sang all the verses because this is truly beautiful!
I’m in love again!!
one of my very favorite versions of this song it is stunning, only Judith Durham’s version even comes close, thanks for this beautiful voice
What year is this footage from?
@macker33 You republicans need to know you were beaten and it’s Londonderry
it’s the Derry Air not londonderry!
@heihachiable I must say, I never really liked this song in the past, but I just saw this video and she really executed it beautifully. I have a new found respect for this song…I suppose it’s never too late to appreciate something of value.
P.s. did you notice how much she looks like Sarah Brightman towards 1.59?
@violinthief: That was a dam great response if I may say so. I hope “macker33″ take note of it for future reference (lol).
Deanna is my favorite singer of them all.
Man, I love this song and have heard it a million times. I never cry… but looking at the lyrics almost made me cry… Weird that he’s never been to Ireland… haha
After fighting with my computer for hours to get Adobe Player to upload, I think I’ve got
it right, click on Deanna’s lovely face and viola!
Wherever she’s living now in Europe, I hope she knows how her fans love her. To say nothing of my squeal of relief at getting to HEAR her through my new speakers!
@violinthief Derry is the name the Irish Catholics use for the city. They resent the British name of Londonderry. I agree with you, Macker33, the name of the song is “Londonderry Air.”
She’s beautiful, just like her voice.
Deanna Durbin’s ,”Danny Boy” I enjoy very much.
One of the best versions i have heard. thank you.
Thank you Ms. Deanna Durbin. I like your Danny Boy the best.
This, a perfect version of the melody written my Ruiari Dall Ó Cathain; Aisling an Óg Fhír (sorry my Gaeilge is rusty); nach dtuigeann tú, tá an ceol seo, go h-an mhaith. More than that…. perfect
