While I’m not incredibly familiar with traditional irish music, the word “traditional” makes me imagine that you’ll need a classical guitar. They look something like this:

As you can see, the headstock and tuners are different. The neck is also a bit wider, and the strings are made of nylon rather than steel which gives it a very different “softer” sound that’s great for certain styles.

    You need a steel string flattop guitar, not the classical guitar some other responder suggested. I’ve been to tons of Irish music concerts including Boys of the Lough, Clancy Brothers, and the Chieftans and that’s all they ever use. The shape, size, and brand of course vary from player to player but it’s always a steel string acoustic.
